Presentation Notes: Script p.1: (presses button) Here it goes
F: (person pops out of machine) what in the world???
p.1: Hey are you…
F: why yes the name is Fredrick Douglass. How can I help you?
p.1: Well my thesis is, in the narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglass, Douglass portrays the trials of slavery in his autobiography through a personal and emotional word choices and style, using tone. But, I need more details
F: I wrote this autobiography to show the struggles of slavery. Things were unfair and unjust. Them masters treated us like animals. So I tried to write with a certain style in order to show the reader how I was treated by Master Thomas and Mr. Covey.
p.2: I recognized your tone. Your attitude showed that you weren’t very happy while working in the fields.
F: That’s right, my true joy was reading and writing, but Master Thomas said I needed to be broken. So he sent me to Mr. Covey in 1833 who done whipped me so many times my back swelled up permanently.
p.3: Why did Mr. Covey whip you so much?
F: umm, I don’t know, I guess something was wrong with him. That’s why I use word choice such as when I called Mr. Covey a snake. When we were in the cornfield and he would be behind every tree and bush. I wanted the reader to be able to visualize what I had to go through. The word choice I use should fully capture these experiences. In the part when I went back to Master Thomas’s I used word choice such as, “get hold of me”, meaning “whip me”, to use voice in order to express the desired tone.
p.2: Can you explain to me some of the emotional style that was used in your autobiography?
F:there was one line that I remember saying, “I resolve to fight; and, suiting my action through the resolution, I seized Covey hard by the throat”. This shows the anger that I felt when I was fed up with the horrific treatment I had to undergo at Master Covey’s.
p.3: I don’t mean to be troublesome Mr. Douglass, but can you give me another example of word choice in your autobiography?
F: most certainly! When I was coming back to Mr. Covey’s plantation, my friend Sandy gave me a root. She told me that this root would stop Mr. Covey or any other white man for that matter, from ever whipping me again. When I took the root I remember writing the sentence. On this Morning, the virtue of the root was fully tested. I used the word virtue because virtue means purity. I wanted to demonstrate how the root was suppose to be full proof.
p.1: Thanks! I think you have summed it all up for me. I can finish my thesis statement.
